Literature Text

We lie here, trapped, caged
In separate prisons we did not build ourselves
But are locked in just the same
Even the brightness of your light
Has trouble escaping
Out into the world
I can sense it there from my own cell, beaming
Out like your smile
And mine too, beaming
Right back, but not bright enough perhaps
Not yet

Could we both be caught facing the walls we have built?
Imaginary stone and steel holding us back
Like confines of our pasts
Yet we still yearn to break free
Unsure of our own direction, just knowing a part
Of the result, the escape
Can it be enough to open that door?
Enough for us to trust ourselves, not knowing
If we can look back and see where we came from
Still I see your smile, wry and knowing
And your eyes full of ideas and hopes and dreams
And I smile all the more

I sense your unease about the shadows in the corner
As a beautiful animal would
Looking to survive first
But we can only survive this, survive us, survive everything
By making our futures,
Making them our own
Free from our pasts and ourselves,
Free from all the things we’ve been waiting for
Those things no longer holding us back
But embracing us
Becoming us
As light reaches out from the east
Beaming to the west
Beginning each new day
A poem I wrote for someone I've never even met.

It's hard to be a happy poet...
